So I'm not going to talk about the travel itself much since there are plenty of other blogs that do that better than I ever could.
Instead I'm going to talk about how I prepared for it and what I did on the trip.
## Packing
I have some [packlists](https://github.com/kevinnie/packlists) for my trips in github so they're easy to update and keep track of when I need them again.
I've been using [PackPoint](http://www.packpoint.me/) for getting my packing lists and it's pretty good! I set it up with my current location and destination and then click on all the things I want to do (and make sure to select that they're outdoor activities so it can account for that) and then tell it whether or not I'm going by plane or train so it can take into account luggage restrictions.
I'm always trying to pack as light as possible because that means less weight for me to carry around and less risk of losing something if my luggage goes missing (which has happened before). Also less stuff = less stuff you have to worry about taking care of while traveling.
I've been doing really well on this recently because I've been traveling without checking bags and just carrying everything on me and then only bringing one carryon bag with me when flying.
For this trip I was carrying the following:
* My work laptop (Dell XPS 13) - since this is what I work on at work
* A Chromebook Pixel - for general web browsing and other light tasks
* My phone (iPhone 6S)
* My Kindle Paperwhite - for reading books when I'm bored
* A Nexus 7 tablet - since it has an SD card slot for movies/music/etc
* A [Raspberry Pi Zero W](https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/pi-zero-w/) - because why not?
* An iPad Pro - for entertainment purposes only
All of these fit into one small backpack with room left over for some other random stuff.
## Travel
My trip started off in Stockholm where I met up with some friends and visited them for a couple days before heading off to Finland where I was going to stay with some friends who live there.
### Stockholm
We had some great meals while we were there including one where we had fresh salmon straight from the water! The salmon was caught by someone from our group who lives in Stockholm and he caught it while he was out fishing in the lake right outside of the city.
It's pretty amazing how fresh food can taste when you're eating something that was caught only hours before!
We also went on a day trip to the archipelago which was really nice! We took a ferry out there which took about an hour or so but it was worth it because we got to see some really beautiful scenery along the way.
### Finland
After leaving Stockholm we headed over to Finland where we stayed with some friends who live there.
We spent most of our time exploring Helsinki which is a really cool city! It has a lot of interesting architecture and there are lots of places to eat good food.
One thing that was really cool about Helsinki is that they have these little markets called "market squares" where people sell all kinds of things like clothes, food, art etc... It's kind of like an outdoor mall but instead of stores there are just people selling their stuff directly out of their homes or shops.
We also went on a day trip to Porvoo which is another city nearby that has some really old buildings from back when Finland was still part of Sweden (before they got independence).
One thing that surprised me about Finland is how much they love ice cream! We went into this little ice cream shop one day and they had like 20 different flavors! They even had some weird ones like "pickle" or "garlic" but they were still delicious!
## Conclusion
Overall this trip was really fun! It's always nice being able to travel with friends because you get to see new places together and share experiences that you might not otherwise get if you were traveling alone.
